Preble Man Killed in Late-Night Collision at Route 281 and Preble Road

PREBLE, N.Y. — A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded late Friday night in the Town of Preble when a two-vehicle crash claimed the life of Wallace Grevelding, according to the Cortland County Sheriff’s Office. The deadly collision occurred around 10:45 p.m. on October 24, 2025, at the intersection of State Route 281 and Preble Road, prompting a large emergency response from multiple local departments.

Authorities reported that Grevelding was driving a Ford SUV that allegedly failed to stop at a posted stop sign before entering the intersection. His vehicle was then struck by a Ford pickup truck traveling southbound along Route 281. The force of the impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles, scattering debris across the roadway and trapping one of the occupants inside.

Emergency personnel from Preble Fire Department, Tully Fire Department, Homer Fire Department, and TLC Emergency Medical Services rushed to the scene, assisted by the Cortland County Coroner’s Office. Despite life-saving efforts, Grevelding tragically succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck was taken to Upstate Medical Center for treatment; their current condition has not been released.

The intersection remained closed for several hours as investigators worked under harsh nighttime conditions to document the scene. The New York State Police, Department of Transportation, and Ron’s Towing provided support with traffic control and vehicle removal. Authorities say the collision caused major delays along Route 281, which is a main roadway connecting Preble to nearby Cortland.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate what led to the fatal crash, including potential contributing factors such as road visibility, speed, and driver distraction. Investigators are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact Sgt. Brendan L’Hommedieu at (607) 758-5540. Officials have not yet determined whether impairment or mechanical failure played a role.

The close-knit community of Preble is mourning the sudden and devastating loss of Wallace Grevelding, remembered by friends and family as a kind and dependable neighbor. His passing has left a lasting void in the hearts of those who knew him. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days as loved ones gather to honor his memory and celebrate his life.
