Westerly Man Killed in Late-Night Motorcycle Crash on Route 32 in Waterford

Authorities in Connecticut are investigating a tragic motorcycle crash that claimed the life of a Westerly man late Saturday night. According to police, the incident occurred around 11:20 p.m. along a stretch of Route 32 near Smith Cove in Waterford. Responding officers discovered that a Harley-Davidson motorcycle had struck a roadside guardrail just before reaching Richards Grove Road.

The motorcyclist, identified as 55-year-old Thomas Peabody of Westerly, Rhode Island, was separated from his motorcycle during the collision and thrown into a wooded area beside the highway. Emergency responders from Waterford Police and local rescue teams arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Peabody was pronounced dead at the scene.

Preliminary findings indicate that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. The Waterford Police Department’s Accident Reconstruction Team is leading the investigation, focusing on possible causes such as road conditions, visibility, speed, or mechanical failure. A section of Route 32 was temporarily closed while officers documented evidence and ensured the area was safe for drivers before reopening the road later that night.

Police are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage from the area to contact investigators at 860-442-9451 or submit tips anonymously at 860-437-8080. Officers said that even small details could help them determine what led to the accident. Investigators are also reviewing nearby surveillance footage and analyzing the motorcycle for signs of malfunction or damage.

The tragic news has deeply saddened both Westerly and Waterford communities. Friends and neighbors have shared condolences on social media, describing Peabody as a kind and devoted man who loved motorcycle riding. Many posts also called for greater awareness and caution from both drivers and riders on local highways, especially at night.

Authorities reminded the public that roads like Route 32 can be challenging for motorcyclists due to sharp curves, uneven pavement, or reduced visibility. They urge riders to wear protective gear, keep headlights bright, and slow down on unfamiliar or winding routes. The Waterford Police Department extended its deepest sympathies to Peabody’s family and thanked first responders for their efforts. As the investigation continues, officials promise a thorough review to determine the cause of the crash and prevent future tragedies.
