Teen Identified, Suspect Charged with Murder in Decatur Shooting

DECATUR, Ill. — Authorities are continuing to investigate a tragic shooting that claimed the life of 17-year-old Tevon Beasley on Friday night, leaving the Decatur community in mourning. The Macon County Coroner’s Office confirmed Beasley’s identity on Monday morning, describing the loss as devastating for his family and friends.

According to the Decatur Police Department (DPD), officers were dispatched shortly after 10 p.m. Friday following reports of gunfire and a disturbance near a business at East Wood Street and Jasper Street. When they arrived, they found Beasley suffering from life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders provided immediate medical care before transporting him to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Investigators launched an extensive search to determine what led to the shooting. Over the weekend, detectives executed search warrants at two locations in the city, gathering evidence and interviewing witnesses. On Sunday, police announced the arrest of Nehemiah T. Meyers, also of Decatur, on a preliminary charge of first-degree murder. He was booked into the Macon County Jail, and prosecutors are now reviewing the case before formal charges are filed.

Authorities have not released further details about a possible motive or whether Beasley and Meyers knew each other. Police said they are continuing to analyze forensic evidence and review security footage from nearby businesses to establish a clearer picture of what transpired that evening.

In a statement, the Decatur Police Department extended its deepest condolences to Beasley’s family and thanked residents who have come forward with information. “We are committed to ensuring justice for the victim and his loved ones,” officials said. “Every tip and every witness account brings us one step closer to understanding what happened.” Police urged anyone with information to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 217-424-2734 or leave anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers at 217-423-8477.

Local leaders and community members have expressed sorrow over the tragedy, calling for continued efforts to address youth violence and promote community safety. Many have taken to social media to share condolences and prayers for Beasley’s family. While police believe the incident was isolated, they emphasized the importance of public cooperation as the investigation continues. The Macon County Coroner’s Office said funeral arrangements for Beasley will be handled privately as his family grieves this heartbreaking loss.
