Authorities in East Haddam, Connecticut, are investigating a tragic crash that claimed the life of a 63-year-old Madison man on Wednesday afternoon. According to a report from the Connecticut State Police, the victim, identified as Stephen Nichols, died after his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck at the intersection of East Haddam Colchester Turnpike and Starr Road.
Police said Nichols was riding a 2005 BMW F650GS motorcycle westbound along East Haddam Colchester Turnpike when a 2015 Toyota Tacoma traveling south on Starr Road attempted to make a left turn onto Olmstead Road. During the turn, the Tacoma crossed into the motorcycle’s path, resulting in a violent collision with the truck’s front left side. The impact caused Nichols to be ejected from his motorcycle and thrown onto the roadway.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes and immediately began life-saving measures. However, despite their efforts, Nichols succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to state police. The driver of the Toyota Tacoma was not injured in the crash and remained at the location to cooperate with investigators.
State troopers and accident reconstruction specialists spent several hours processing the site, documenting evidence, and taking measurements to determine how the collision occurred. The intersection was temporarily closed to traffic as investigators worked to clear debris and gather information for their ongoing report. Police are reviewing factors such as visibility, road conditions, and driver behavior as part of the investigation.
Authorities have not released any information regarding potential charges or citations at this time. The Connecticut State Police encouraged anyone who witnessed the crash or may have information about the events leading up to it to contact Troop K in Colchester to assist in the investigation.
The fatal crash has left the Madison and East Haddam communities mourning the loss of Stephen Nichols, described by those who knew him as a kind and passionate individual who enjoyed riding and spending time outdoors. Friends and family are remembering him for his warm personality and love of adventure. As the investigation continues, state police are reminding all motorists to remain alert and cautious when sharing the road with motorcycles, emphasizing that even a moment’s distraction can have devastating consequences.
