BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. — The Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred early Sunday morning, October 5, along West Lynchburg Turnpike, just west of Wheatland Road. Authorities confirmed that 40-year-old Stacee Lee LaClair, a resident of Bedford, lost her life after being struck by a vehicle shortly after 7 a.m.
According to preliminary reports, LaClair was walking along the roadway when she was hit by a GMC Yukon traveling westbound. The driver told police that they noticed the pedestrian ahead and attempted to avoid a collision by shifting from the right lane into the left. Unfortunately, investigators say LaClair moved in the same direction at the same moment, resulting in the fatal impact.
Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, LaClair was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Yukon remained at the location and fully cooperated with investigators. Officials have not disclosed whether speed, lighting conditions, or impairment played a role in the incident, but they emphasized that the investigation is ongoing.
Crash reconstruction specialists from the Virginia State Police are continuing to analyze evidence from the scene, including vehicle data, measurements, and witness statements. Authorities have not filed any charges at this time but noted that a full report will be completed once all factors—including road design, environmental conditions, and pedestrian movement—are reviewed.
Residents in the area expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, describing that portion of West Lynchburg Turnpike as a dangerous stretch, particularly during early morning hours when visibility is limited. Many have called for improved lighting and pedestrian safety measures, noting that sidewalks are sparse in some sections of the roadway.
The Virginia State Police extended condolences to LaClair’s family and friends, reminding both drivers and pedestrians to exercise caution. Officials urged pedestrians to wear reflective clothing and remain alert when walking near traffic, while advising motorists to stay vigilant, slow down in low-visibility conditions, and always watch for people sharing the road. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact the Bedford County State Police Office with information.
