Forest High Student Fatally Struck While Walking to Bus Stop in Ocala

OCALA, Fla. — Authorities in Ocala are investigating a heartbreaking traffic incident that claimed the life of 18-year-old Shannon Rushing, a senior at Forest High School, on the morning of October 27. According to the Ocala Police Department, Rushing was struck by a vehicle while walking to her bus stop in the city’s northwest area shortly after 6 a.m.

Police said they received a call at 6:21 a.m. and immediately dispatched emergency responders to Old Blitchton Road, where the collision occurred. Despite their best efforts, Rushing was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined that a 60-year-old woman driving a Nissan SUV was traveling east when her vehicle struck the student from behind as she walked along the roadway. The driver stopped immediately, called 911, and cooperated fully with responding officers.

The crash occurred along the 1900 block of Old Blitchton Road, a two-lane, unlit stretch with a 30 mph speed limit. Authorities have not determined whether speed played a role, but they noted that visibility at the time was low. Police recovered a set of headphones among the debris, and family members told investigators that Rushing often wore them while walking. Detectives are reviewing this evidence as part of their ongoing investigation into the circumstances of the crash.

This marks the 13th traffic-related fatality in Ocala this year, compared to 11 during the same period in 2024. Officials are urging both drivers and pedestrians to use extra caution on dimly lit roads and near school bus routes. The Ocala Police Department is reviewing potential roadway safety measures in the area, including improved lighting or additional signage to protect pedestrians.

The Marion County Public School District released a heartfelt statement remembering Rushing as a warm, cheerful, and well-loved member of the Forest High community. She attended Ward-Highlands Elementary and Howard Middle School before becoming a Forest High senior. Staff and classmates described her as “very personable, bubbly, and kindhearted,” someone who always offered encouragement to those around her.

In response to the tragedy, grief counselors have been made available at Forest High School to support students and staff. “We are heartbroken by this tragedy,” school officials said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Shannon’s family, friends, and everyone affected by this loss.” As the investigation continues, the Ocala community is rallying together, offering condolences and calling for stronger pedestrian safety measures to prevent future heartbreaks.
