One Officer Dead, Several Others Wounded in North Codorus Township Shooting

NORTH CODORUS TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A warrant service in York County turned deadly Wednesday afternoon when gunfire erupted, leaving multiple law enforcement officers shot, including at least one who has died. Officials confirmed that the suspect, who was the subject of the warrant, also died at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The incident occurred around 2:10 p.m. near a residence in the 1800 block of Harr Road, a rural farming area of North Codorus Township roughly 115 miles west of Philadelphia and close to the Maryland border. Authorities said officers were attempting to serve a warrant when the suspect opened fire, sparking a violent exchange that quickly escalated into a large-scale emergency response.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene, where at least five officers were struck by gunfire. Two officers were airlifted by medevac helicopters, while others were transported to WellSpan York Hospital in serious condition. Hospital officials confirmed that heightened security protocols were put in place as the injured arrived, underscoring the gravity of the unfolding situation. Officials later said that three of the wounded officers were in grave condition.

The chaos prompted a shelter-in-place order across parts of the Spring Grove School District, as authorities worked to secure the area. District leaders emphasized that there was no direct threat to students or staff, but buses and dismissals were delayed while nearby roads remained closed. Parents were assured that children were safe inside schools while law enforcement managed the emergency.

The shooting drew swift reaction from state and local officials. Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. Austin Davis called for unity, writing on social media, “Please send prayers to the officers and those involved in the shooting in York County.” The Consulate of Mexico in Philadelphia also issued a statement saying it was closely monitoring the situation due to the area’s migrant worker population, urging Mexican nationals in the region to follow official safety guidance.

By Wednesday evening, the York County Office of Emergency Management confirmed that multiple agencies remained on scene, including the Pennsylvania State Police. Neither the identity of the deceased officer nor the suspect had been released. For now, the rural stretch of Harr Road, usually marked by apple orchards and farmland, remains a heavily secured crime scene. The shooting has deepened a sense of grief and unease across York County, just months after another deadly incident earlier this year.
