UVALDE, Texas — Authorities are investigating the tragic death of 35-year-old Regina Santos-Aviles, a regional district director for Congressman Tony Gonzales, after she was found engulfed in flames outside her Uvalde home. The married mother of an 8-year-old boy suffered severe burns on September 13 and later died from her injuries, leaving behind questions about whether her death was intentional or accidental.

According to a report released by the Uvalde Fire Department, Santos-Aviles doused herself in gasoline before igniting the fire. Nearby gasoline cans were extinguished by firefighters when they arrived on scene. Despite the circumstances, the Uvalde Police Department has stated it does not suspect foul play or the involvement of any other individual. She was discovered by her mother, still alive but severely burned, before being airlifted to a hospital where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
While the official investigation continues, Santos-Aviles’ family firmly believes her death was not intentional. They pointed to her final words, reportedly telling relatives, “I don’t want to die.” Loved ones insist the fire was a tragic accident, not an act of self-harm. Surveillance footage confirmed she was alone when the incident occurred, though authorities have not yet revealed additional details.
Santos-Aviles was remembered by colleagues and friends as a woman deeply committed to her community and family. Congressman Gonzales described her as someone who dedicated herself to improving the lives of Texans. “She loved the work that she did and how she helped the communities get funding for things they needed,” Gonzales told the San Antonio Express-News. In a public statement, he added, “We are all heart-stricken by the recent news. She will always be remembered for her passion toward Uvalde and helping the community become a better place.”
Since 2021, Santos-Aviles had served in Gonzales’ office, where she played a key role in connecting local communities with federal resources. Friends and family said her vibrant personality, generosity, and devotion to her son made her a central figure in both her professional and personal circles. Her sudden death has left the community in shock, as many struggle to reconcile the devastating circumstances with her love for life and family.
The investigation into Santos-Aviles’ death remains ongoing, with medical examiners expected to release a final report in the coming weeks. Until then, the unanswered question lingers: was this a tragic accident or a deliberate act?
