Tylertown Woman Killed in Collision with Garbage Truck on Highway 98

PIKE COUNTY, Miss. — Authorities are investigating a devastating crash that claimed the life of a Tylertown woman following a collision with a garbage truck Monday morning in Pike County. The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) reported that the incident occurred around 9 a.m. on October 20, 2025, along Highway 98, a route known for its heavy traffic and frequent accidents. The crash brought traffic to a standstill for several hours as investigators worked to determine what led to the fatal collision.

According to preliminary findings, a 2019 Nissan Altima driven by 33-year-old Samantha Barnum of Tylertown was traveling westbound when it collided with a 2017 Mack garbage truck. Authorities say Barnum’s vehicle struck the truck under unclear circumstances before veering off the roadway. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency personnel, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin were notified shortly after.

The driver and passenger of the garbage truck sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Both are expected to make full recoveries. The Mississippi Highway Patrol, assisted by the Pike County Sheriff’s Office and local fire departments, responded swiftly to the crash, securing the scene and directing traffic. Officials temporarily closed the affected section of Highway 98 to allow investigators to collect evidence and clear debris.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash. Factors such as speed, road conditions, or driver impairment have not yet been confirmed. Authorities have urged any witnesses or drivers with dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident to contact the Mississippi Highway Patrol’s Troop M office. The department emphasized that even small details could assist in piecing together the moments leading up to the collision.

Local residents say the stretch of Highway 98 where the crash occurred has long been a concern due to heavy commercial traffic and limited visibility. The tragedy has reignited calls for additional safety measures, such as better lighting and improved signage. Community members have taken to social media to express condolences and support for Barnum’s family, describing her as a “kind-hearted and hardworking woman” who will be deeply missed.

As the investigation continues, the Mississippi Highway Patrol reminded motorists to stay alert and maintain safe distances when driving near large commercial vehicles. Officials stressed that awareness and patience on the road are crucial in preventing similar tragedies. No charges or citations have been issued at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing.
