CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Pa. – A deadly crash in Lemoyne Borough claimed the life of a motorcyclist Tuesday morning, according to the Cumberland County Coroner’s Office. The accident occurred around 7:30 a.m. in the 500 block of South Third Street near Clark Street and involved two cars and a motorcycle.
Authorities identified the victim as 65-year-old Robert Allen Rustay of New Cumberland. Rustay was pronounced dead at the scene after sustaining fatal injuries in the collision. Emergency responders quickly arrived but were unable to save him. His death has left the local community in mourning as investigators work to piece together what led to the tragedy.
The West Shore Regional Police Department confirmed that one person present at the scene was taken into custody after showing “signs of impairment.” Officials did not immediately release the individual’s identity or confirm whether charges have been filed. Police also reported that one of the vehicle drivers involved in the crash was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries, though the severity of those injuries remains unknown.
Pennsylvania State Police have been called in to assist with a full crash reconstruction. Investigators are examining the vehicles, roadway conditions, and other evidence to determine the sequence of events. Witnesses at the scene are being interviewed, and authorities have urged anyone with additional information to come forward to help provide clarity in the ongoing investigation.
In the immediate aftermath of the crash, emergency crews blocked off the section of South Third Street between Haldeman Avenue and Walton Street. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) confirmed that the roadway closure remains in effect as police complete their investigation. Drivers are being advised to use alternate routes until the scene is cleared and the roadway reopened, though no estimated timeline has been given.
The fatal collision highlights the persistent dangers motorcyclists face when sharing the road with larger vehicles. Safety advocates often emphasize the importance of cautious driving and awareness from all motorists to reduce the risk of such accidents. For now, Cumberland County officials and law enforcement remain focused on determining whether impairment played a role in Rustay’s death, while the community reflects on the loss of a longtime resident.
