North Minneapolis Mother Fatally Shot by Ex-Boyfriend Despite Restraining Order

Minneapolis, MN – A North Minneapolis woman was fatally shot multiple times outside her home Sunday morning in what family members are calling a devastating act of domestic violence. The victim, 34-year-old Riah Samuels, had recently taken legal steps to protect herself, including obtaining a restraining order against her ex-boyfriend.

According to police, the deadly shooting occurred on Russell Avenue North, where Samuels was ambushed outside her home. Authorities say she was struck at least ten times. Despite attempts to save her, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Her aunt, Carolyn Brooks, described the attack as a brutal betrayal of trust and a tragic example of a system failing to keep women safe from dangerous partners.

Family members said Samuels had been fearful for her life in the days leading up to her death. Just hours before the shooting, she posted on Facebook that she was being stalked and not receiving the protection she desperately needed. Loved ones now see her words as a heartbreaking cry for help that went unanswered.

Samuels had just turned 34 and celebrated the milestone with her two children. Friends and relatives described her as a devoted mother who worked hard to provide for her family. “She wanted nothing more than to watch her kids grow up,” her aunt said. “Instead, they’re left without their mother because someone who should have stayed away ignored the law.”

The case has renewed attention on the limits of restraining orders in preventing domestic violence. Advocates say that while protective orders are important, they often cannot stop determined abusers from acting violently. Community members in Minneapolis expressed outrage, saying more needs to be done to safeguard victims who report threats. “A piece of paper is not enough when someone is determined to do harm,” one neighbor remarked.

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect, though family members insist it was Samuels’ former partner Wright David Eugene. Investigators confirmed that the suspect fled the scene but emphasized that the case remains active. For Samuels’ family, the priority now is justice and ensuring her children receive the care and support they need. “She should still be here,” Brooks said. “No woman should have to die after asking for protection.”
