SAN FRANCISCO — Authorities have identified the four family members found dead inside a home in the city’s Westwood Highlands neighborhood, as police continue investigating what they have described as a “suspicious” case. The shocking discovery has left the close-knit community reeling, with residents seeking answers to what led to the tragic loss.
According to the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s Office, the victims were 57-year-old Thomas Russell Ocheltree, 53-year-old Paula Truong, and their daughters, 12-year-old Alexandra and 9-year-old Mackenzie Ocheltree. The family lived in a home on the 900 block of Monterey Boulevard, where police were called around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday for a welfare check. When officers entered the residence, they found all four family members unresponsive.
While two unnamed sources told local outlet KTVU that the deaths may have been self-inflicted, authorities have not confirmed that information. The San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) has classified the case as a set of suspicious deaths and emphasized that evidence collected so far suggests possible criminal activity. Officer Robert Rueca said the department’s homicide unit is leading the investigation due to “the nature of the scene” but stopped short of labeling it a homicide. “At this point, the evidence is pointing toward a criminal case,” Rueca stated.
Autopsies are currently being conducted by the medical examiner’s office to determine the exact causes and manners of death. Investigators are also analyzing forensic evidence and interviewing witnesses to piece together what happened inside the home. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact the SFPD tip line as the inquiry continues.
Residents of Westwood Highlands, a quiet, family-oriented neighborhood, expressed disbelief over the tragedy. Neighbors described the Ocheltree family as friendly and devoted parents who enjoyed decorating their home during the holidays. One neighbor, Benoit, said, “It’s terrible, especially when you hear that there are young kids involved.” Another resident, Douglas, recalled, “It was always one of the best-decorated houses around. They seemed happy and proud of their home.”
As the investigation unfolds, officials are asking the public to avoid speculation and wait for verified details. The deaths of the Ocheltree family have deeply shaken the San Francisco community, with city leaders and residents expressing grief and solidarity for those mourning the loss. Authorities say more information will be released once autopsy results and forensic analyses are complete.
