71-Year-Old Motorcyclist Killed in Tragic I-65 Crash in Mobile

MOBILE, Ala. — Authorities in Mobile are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of a 71-year-old man on Sunday morning along Interstate 65. The accident occurred in the northbound lanes between Airport Boulevard and Dauphin Street and involved a motorcycle and another vehicle, according to the Mobile Police Department.

Officers were dispatched to the scene around 8:50 a.m. after receiving reports of a collision. When emergency crews arrived, they found the motorcyclist, later identified as Paul Wike, suffering from severe injuries. Responders administered first aid before rushing him to a nearby hospital, but despite their efforts, Wike was pronounced dead a short time later. His family has since been notified of the tragic loss.

Preliminary findings indicate that the crash occurred as another driver was merging onto I-65 North from Airport Boulevard. The vehicle reportedly lost control during the merge, prompting Wike, who was already traveling on the highway, to take evasive action. In his attempt to avoid a collision, he braked suddenly and lost control of his motorcycle, causing it to slide and crash.

Police confirmed that the motorcycle and the other vehicle did not make physical contact, emphasizing that the incident unfolded rapidly as a result of chain-reaction maneuvers. Investigators are reviewing witness accounts and nearby traffic camera footage to determine the exact sequence of events. Authorities noted that weather and road conditions were clear at the time and did not appear to play a role in the crash.

The section of I-65 was temporarily closed as first responders worked to assist at the scene and investigators gathered evidence. The driver of the other vehicle remained at the site and fully cooperated with law enforcement. No charges or citations have been issued, and the case remains under active investigation as authorities work to finalize their report.

Motorcycle safety advocates are once again reminding both riders and motorists to remain vigilant on the road. They stress the importance of awareness, maintaining safe distances, and exercising caution during merging situations. Friends and neighbors of Wike described him as an experienced rider who loved the freedom of the open road. The Mobile Police Department has extended heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones as the community mourns his passing.
