Authorities are investigating a tragic crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian Saturday night near the village of Elgin in the Township of Rideau Lakes. According to the Leeds County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), the incident occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m. on October 25, 2025, along Highway 15.

Police said the pedestrian, identified as 43-year-old Nick Simmons of Kingston, was struck by a southbound SUV while walking near the highway. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but despite their efforts, Simmons was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the SUV remained on site and was not injured.
The OPP East Region Traffic Incident Management and Enforcement (TIME) team is leading the investigation with assistance from the Technical Collision Investigation Unit (TCI) and an OPP Collision Reconstructionist. Officers closed a section of Highway 15 for several hours to thoroughly document the scene and collect evidence before reopening the roadway later that night.
At this time, police have not laid any charges, and the investigation remains ongoing. A postmortem examination has been ordered to help determine the exact cause of death and clarify the circumstances leading to the collision. Authorities said all factors, including visibility and roadway conditions, are being reviewed.
