Authorities have identified 36-year-old Nerissa Lee, Assistant Principal at Lincoln Middle School, as one of three people killed in a shooting that shook the Berwyn community on Tuesday afternoon. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed her identity, and the school district later released a statement mourning her loss and acknowledging the deep impact on students and staff.
The violence unfolded around 4:00 p.m. on September 16 in front of Lincoln Middle School, located near 16th Street and Elmwood Avenue. According to officials, police officers in the area witnessed a man armed with a rifle open fire on a vehicle parked outside the school. In the chaos, the suspect also fired at the responding officers before ultimately turning the gun on himself, dying at the scene.
Inside the targeted vehicle, two people, including Assistant Principal Lee, were fatally struck by the gunfire. A third victim was also pronounced dead shortly after. Authorities have not yet released the names of the other victims, and the motive for the attack remains under investigation. Detectives are reviewing evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements, to determine whether the suspect had any connection to those killed.
In response to the tragedy, Lincoln Middle School was closed on Wednesday as officials worked to ensure the safety and emotional well-being of students and staff. District leaders confirmed that the school is expected to reopen on Thursday, with counselors and crisis response teams in place to provide ongoing support. Parents were also urged to speak openly with their children about the incident and reach out for help if needed.
Colleagues and community members have described Lee as a dedicated educator who made a lasting difference in the lives of her students. “Her passing is a devastating loss for our school community,” the district’s statement read. Lee was known for her commitment to creating a nurturing and supportive environment, and her absence will be deeply felt by both staff and students.
As the investigation continues, community leaders and school officials are asking residents to keep the families of the victims and the Lincoln Middle School community in their thoughts and prayers. The sudden violence has left Berwyn reeling, highlighting both the fragility of life and the profound impact that educators like Lee have on the communities they serve.
