Mt. Zion Man Killed in Two-Semi Crash Near La Place, Illinois

LA PLACE, Ill. — Authorities have identified the driver killed in a devastating semi-truck collision earlier this week in Moultrie County. The victim has been named as 63-year-old Michael B. Griffith of Mt. Zion, according to the Illinois State Police. The crash happened late Wednesday morning at the intersection of Illinois Route 32 and U.S. Route 36, just south of La Place.

Emergency dispatchers reported the collision around 10:45 a.m., bringing a large response from state troopers, local law enforcement, and fire and EMS crews. The violent crash involved two semi-trucks and forced officials to close the busy intersection for nearly six hours while investigators and cleanup crews worked the scene. Motorists were directed to alternate routes as traffic in the area came to a standstill.

Preliminary details from Illinois State Police indicate the crash began when one semi-truck, traveling along IL 32, attempted to pull into the intersection. As the truck crossed the roadway, its trailer was struck by another semi heading eastbound on U.S. 36. The force of the impact left both vehicles heavily damaged and scattered debris across the roadway, underscoring the severity of the collision.

Griffith, who was driving one of the trucks, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite medical intervention, he was later pronounced dead. The other driver involved also required hospital care, but authorities confirmed that person survived. Officials have not yet released further details regarding the second driver’s condition or which of the two trucks Griffith had been operating.

Investigators are now focusing on what factors may have contributed to the deadly crash. State police confirmed that their inquiry will include examining possible driver error, roadway visibility, and vehicle speed. As is standard in serious commercial trucking accidents, both vehicles will undergo detailed mechanical inspections. At this time, no citations or charges have been issued, though authorities emphasized the investigation remains active.

Griffith’s death has left the Mt. Zion community mourning the loss of a longtime resident. At 63 years old, he was part of an industry that carries immense responsibility and risk. Semi-truck crashes, particularly at intersections, are often catastrophic due to the massive size and weight of the vehicles involved. As loved ones grieve his sudden passing, officials stress that the investigation will take time before final conclusions are released. For now, the tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the dangers that can unfold on busy Illinois highways.
