PROVIDENCE, R.I. — A tragic traffic incident Thursday night has claimed the life of 78-year-old Michael Demaula, leaving a Providence neighborhood mourning the loss of a longtime resident. Authorities say the fatal crash occurred near the intersection of Branch Avenue and Abram Street, an area known for steady traffic and limited nighttime visibility.
According to Providence Police spokesperson Kristy Dos Reis, emergency crews responded to the scene shortly after reports came in of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle. Preliminary findings suggest that Demaula was walking near or crossing the roadway when he was hit by a van traveling through the intersection. Officers and paramedics provided immediate aid before transporting him to a nearby hospital. Sadly, Demaula succumbed to his injuries overnight, police confirmed Friday morning.
The driver of the van, who has not been publicly identified, remained at the scene and cooperated fully with law enforcement. Authorities said there were no signs of impairment or attempts to flee. At this stage, no charges or citations have been issued as investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.
