MIAMI, FL — Two Miami police officers were shot Thursday morning during a violent confrontation that unfolded in the city’s Allapattah neighborhood, leading to a tense, hours-long standoff that ended with the suspect dead. Authorities later identified the gunman as 27-year-old Mason Triana, who was found deceased inside a residence after exchanging gunfire with officers.

According to Miami Police Chief Manny Morales, the incident began around 7:00 a.m. when officers were dispatched to NW 15th Avenue and NW 26th Street to investigate reports of an abandoned vehicle. Finding no one nearby, officers requested a tow truck. Moments later, a ShotSpotter alert—a gunfire detection system—indicated shots fired nearby. Responding officers soon discovered another vehicle riddled with bullets in the area. As they examined the scene, Triana reportedly opened fire on them, striking two officers.
Authorities confirmed that a male sergeant suffered a gunshot wound to the knee, while a female officer was shot in the ankle. Both officers were rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital, where they were treated and listed in stable condition. Chief Morales visited them later in the day, describing their demeanor as calm and professional despite the ordeal. “They were brave, composed, and eager to recover,” he said. “Their actions this morning saved lives.”
After the initial shooting, Triana barricaded himself inside a nearby home, prompting a large-scale response involving SWAT, crisis negotiators, and tactical units. Nearby streets were blocked off, and residents were urged to remain indoors as police surrounded the area. Witnesses reported hearing intermittent gunfire during the standoff, which stretched for several tense hours. At one point, Triana allegedly emerged from the house armed with a high-caliber rifle and fired toward officers before retreating inside again.
When officers eventually entered the residence, Triana was found dead. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether his death was the result of police gunfire or a self-inflicted wound. A second person connected to the incident was detained for questioning, though officials have not released details about their possible involvement. No additional injuries were reported among officers or civilians.
Chief Morales praised the professionalism and restraint shown by responding officers throughout the ordeal. “This could have ended much worse,” he said. The Miami Police Department and Florida Department of Law Enforcement are now investigating the sequence of events and motive behind the attack. The community remains shaken but relieved that both wounded officers are expected to recover fully.
