RANDOLPH COUNTY, WV — A tragic single-vehicle crash claimed the life of a Pendleton County woman on Wednesday evening in Randolph County, according to the West Virginia State Police. Authorities identified the victim as 55-year-old Mary Redrode of Brandywine. The fatal crash occurred along U.S. Route 219 in Huttonsville at approximately 6 p.m.
Investigators said Redrode was traveling north when, for reasons still under review, her vehicle veered off the main roadway. The car reportedly struck a roadside culvert before overturning and coming to rest off the highway. Emergency responders arrived shortly after receiving reports of the crash, but despite their efforts, Redrode was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other vehicles or individuals were involved in the incident.
The crash site was temporarily closed to allow troopers to investigate and clear the area. Members of the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office and local emergency crews assisted with traffic control and safety measures. State Police are examining several possible factors, including road conditions, driver distraction, mechanical issues, or speed, though no definitive cause has yet been determined.
Residents familiar with the area described that stretch of U.S. 219 near Huttonsville as particularly challenging, with winding roads and limited visibility, especially during evening hours. Authorities are also reviewing weather conditions at the time to determine whether environmental factors contributed to the crash.
In a statement, State Police expressed condolences to Redrode’s family and friends, acknowledging the loss as a painful blow to the Brandywine community. Local residents described Redrode as a kind, hardworking woman devoted to her family. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but neighbors and friends have shared messages of sympathy and support for her loved ones.
The West Virginia State Police continue to investigate the crash and encourage anyone with information to contact their Randolph County detachment. Officials also urged motorists to remain alert on rural highways, obey posted speed limits, and exercise extra caution in areas with curves or narrow shoulders. As the investigation moves forward, authorities reaffirmed that there is no sign of criminal activity, describing the tragedy as a heartbreaking accident on one of the region’s rural roads.
