WESTPORT, MA — Authorities are investigating a fatal industrial accident that occurred Friday morning at a Westport scrap yard, claiming the life of a Taunton man. The incident has prompted a joint response from local and state officials, as well as federal workplace safety investigators.
According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, emergency crews were dispatched to Mid City Scrap, located at 548 State Road, around 11:10 a.m. following reports of a medical emergency involving a worker. Upon arrival, first responders discovered 49-year-old Mark Peters of Taunton suffering from severe crushing injuries to his lower body.
Peters was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. Despite lifesaving efforts by medical staff, officials confirmed that he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. His death has left coworkers and family members devastated as authorities work to determine exactly how the accident occurred.
Members of the Westport Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, and an OSHA Safety and Health Officer responded to the scene shortly after the incident. Investigators remained at the facility for several hours, interviewing witnesses and assessing equipment and working conditions.
While the District Attorney’s Office stated that the investigation is ongoing, early findings indicate that the accident does not appear to be suspicious. Officials have not yet provided specific details about what led to the crushing injury or whether any machinery malfunctioned. OSHA will continue its review to determine if any workplace safety violations contributed to the tragedy.
The management of Mid City Scrap has not released a public statement as of Friday evening. Meanwhile, authorities extended condolences to Peters’ family and coworkers, emphasizing the importance of workplace safety and the devastating impact such accidents have on local communities. The investigation remains active, with updates expected once officials complete their assessment.
