YORK COUNTY, Pa. — Authorities have released additional details about a devastating crash that claimed the life of a Dauphin County man on September 28 along Interstate 83 in Fairview Township. The incident, which occurred near Exit 40 in the New Cumberland area, led to a fiery scene that temporarily shut down part of the highway and left one man dead and two others injured.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the vehicle was heading southbound when it suddenly veered off the roadway and slammed into a concrete barrier. The force of the impact caused severe damage, rupturing the car’s fuel tank and triggering an explosion of flames. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicle engulfed within moments, sending thick black smoke billowing across the interstate.
Heroic bystanders stopped to help, racing toward the burning vehicle despite the danger. Police confirmed that several passing motorists managed to pull all three occupants to safety before emergency crews arrived. The York County Coroner’s Office later identified the driver as 33-year-old Marco Ambrocio Gonzalez of Harrisburg, who tragically died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. His death was ruled accidental, and no foul play is suspected.
Two passengers, both men in their 20s, suffered minor injuries and were treated by paramedics. Authorities said their conditions were not life-threatening. Firefighters, state troopers, and EMS personnel responded quickly, battling the flames and securing the area. The crash prompted a full closure of a nearby ramp on I-83 for over eight hours as crews worked to extinguish the fire and conduct a detailed investigation.
Investigators are still working to determine what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. Police have not confirmed whether speed, distraction, or mechanical issues played a role. At this time, no other vehicles are believed to have been involved. The section of I-83 where the crash occurred is known for heavy commuter traffic and tight curves, making it a frequent site of accidents.
Community members expressed sorrow over the loss of Gonzalez, praising the bravery of those who intervened to save lives. Authorities are urging motorists to remain alert, reduce speed in high-traffic areas, and never approach a burning vehicle. The Pennsylvania State Police continue to investigate the crash, describing it as a tragic reminder of how quickly a routine drive can turn deadly.
