16-year-old Lizzell Palma killed in Tragic Murder-Suicide Near Bus Stop in Algiers

NEW ORLEANS — A tragic shooting in the Algiers neighborhood Wednesday morning claimed the lives of 16-year-old Lizzell Palma and a 20-year-old man, in what authorities have confirmed as a murder-suicide, according to the New Orleans Police Department.

Police said they received reports of gunfire around 7:45 a.m. and arrived on the scene shortly after 8 a.m., where they discovered Palma dead from multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators determined that she was walking to her bus stop when the man followed her, opened fire, and then turned the gun on himself. The suspect was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Officials with the Metropolitan Crime Commission noted that this incident marks the fifth murder-suicide in New Orleans since September 25, highlighting growing concerns about violence within the city. The relationship between the two victims has not yet been publicly confirmed, and detectives continue to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact CrimeStoppers at (504) 822-1111.

The Walter L. Cohen High School, where Palma was a junior, closed for the day following the tragedy. In a statement, school officials described her as “a bright and compassionate young woman who brought joy to everyone who knew her.” Grief counselors are being made available to students and staff to help them cope with the sudden loss.

Friends and classmates gathered at the scene Wednesday afternoon, leaving flowers, candles, and handwritten notes in memory of the teen. Many described Palma as “a funny, ambitious, and kind-hearted person” who had dreams of becoming a nurse. Community members expressed outrage and sorrow over her death, calling for stronger measures to protect young people from senseless acts of violence.

As the investigation continues, city leaders and local organizations are urging residents to seek support if they or someone they know may be struggling with anger, depression, or relationship issues. The New Orleans Police Department is expected to release additional details in the coming days. For now, the Algiers community mourns the loss of Lizzell Palma, a young life full of promise, taken far too soon.
