La Mesa Police Officer Killed While Assisting Drivers on I-8

LA MESA, Calif. — A young police officer lost her life in the line of duty late Monday night after being struck by a vehicle while helping motorists involved in a crash on Interstate 8. Authorities have identified the victim as 25-year-old Officer Lauren Craven of the La Mesa Police Department.

According to officials, the tragedy occurred on October 20, 2025, at approximately 10:24 p.m., near Fairmount Avenue on I-8 eastbound. Officer Craven had been driving east on the freeway when she stopped to assist two drivers involved in a prior multi-vehicle collision. While she was helping the motorists, an oncoming vehicle struck her, fatally injuring the young officer.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) and emergency crews quickly responded to the scene. CHP officers immediately began life-saving efforts, but despite their attempts, Officer Craven was pronounced dead at the scene. The section of I-8 where the crash occurred was shut down for several hours overnight as investigators processed evidence and reconstructed the events leading up to the fatal incident.

In a statement released early Tuesday, the La Mesa Police Department expressed profound grief over the loss of one of their own. “Officer Craven was a dedicated and compassionate member of our department who gave her life in service to others,” the statement read. “Our hearts are broken, and we extend our deepest condolences to her family, friends, and fellow officers.” Officials confirmed that Craven had joined the department in February 2024 and was assigned to the Patrol Division, where she was known for her professionalism and commitment to helping others.

The California Highway Patrol is leading the investigation into the crash to determine what caused the oncoming driver to lose control and strike the officer. Authorities have not yet released details about the driver involved but said cooperation has been forthcoming. Investigators are reviewing witness statements, dashcam footage, and road conditions at the time of the crash to establish a full picture of what happened.

News of Officer Craven’s death has sent shockwaves through the La Mesa community and law enforcement agencies across San Diego County. Flags outside police headquarters were lowered to half-staff Tuesday morning as officers gathered to honor her memory. A procession and memorial service are expected to be announced in the coming days.
