LOVE COUNTY, Okla. — Authorities are investigating a deadly three-vehicle collision that occurred Sunday night just north of Thackerville, leaving one person dead and two others injured. According to the Love County Sheriff’s Office, the crash happened around 8 p.m. on U.S. Highway 77. Emergency crews arrived to find extensive damage to multiple vehicles, forcing the temporary closure of both lanes as responders worked to assist victims and clear the scene.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP) reported that 23-year-old Kyra Shelton was traveling northbound when she attempted to pass a semi-truck. During the maneuver, Shelton’s vehicle collided head-on with a southbound car driven by 34-year-old Sydney Frosch of Marietta. Despite the efforts of first responders, Frosch succumbed to her injuries at the scene. The collision’s impact left debris scattered across the roadway, highlighting the force of the crash.
Authorities said a passenger in Frosch’s vehicle was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries not believed to be life-threatening. Shelton was also hospitalized for treatment, while the driver of the semi-truck was uninjured. Following the crash, both directions of Highway 77 were closed for several hours as investigators documented evidence and towed away the damaged vehicles before reopening the road late Sunday night.
Investigators have not yet determined the exact cause of the collision. The OHP continues to examine whether speed, weather conditions, or visibility contributed to the fatal crash. Officials confirmed there are no immediate indications of impairment. Residents familiar with the area note that the stretch of Highway 77 near Thackerville is often challenging for drivers due to narrow lanes and limited sightlines that make passing maneuvers dangerous.
The Love County Sheriff’s Office extended condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and praised the Thackerville Volunteer Fire Department and emergency medical personnel for their swift response. Community members in Marietta have expressed deep sorrow over Frosch’s death, describing her as a kind and compassionate person whose loss will be felt throughout the community.
As the investigation continues, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol urges motorists to remain cautious and avoid risky passing attempts on two-lane highways. Even a brief miscalculation, officials warn, can have life-altering consequences. No charges have been filed at this time, and OHP stated the findings will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office upon completion of the investigation.
