DALLAS, Texas – Federal investigators are continuing their search for answers following a deadly shooting at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility Tuesday morning that left one detainee dead and two others injured. Authorities later identified the suspected gunman as 29-year-old Joshua Jahn, whose body was found nearby after what officials say was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the shooting began around 6:20 a.m. when Jahn opened fire “indiscriminately” at the ICE building and a transport van inside the facility’s sallyport. Several victims were struck before officers secured the scene. Investigators later recovered unspent shell casings inscribed with the words “ANTI-ICE.” FBI Director Kash Patel shared an image of one such casing on social media, calling the incident a “chilling act of domestic extremism.”

Authorities discovered Jahn’s body on the roof of a nearby immigration attorney’s office, along with additional ammunition. Officials confirmed that the suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators also recovered a vehicle believed to belong to Jahn, which contained a handwritten sign referencing “radioactive fallout from nuclear formations.” The FBI subsequently executed a search warrant at his family’s Fairview, Texas home, valued at nearly $850,000.
Family members described Jahn as “unique” and said he had previously worked in computer coding but was unemployed at the time of the attack. His older brother, Noah Jahn, expressed shock, saying Joshua was not politically active and had shown no animosity toward ICE. “I didn’t think he was politically interested,” Noah told NBCDFW. “He wasn’t involved in politics on either side as far as I knew.” Despite acknowledging that Joshua had access to firearms, Noah insisted his brother was not a skilled shooter.
Public records show Jahn’s criminal history was limited. In 2016, he was arrested on a felony marijuana charge and later sentenced to five years’ probation, along with fines and restitution. More recently, he had been planning to relocate to his parents’ property in Oklahoma. His mother, Sharon Jahn, a retired school administrator, previously made headlines in 2022 for criticizing Texas officials over gun policies following the Uvalde school shooting.
The Dallas ICE facility shooting has drawn national attention. President Donald Trump condemned the attack, calling Jahn “deranged” and describing the act as “despicable.” Trump also argued that harsh political rhetoric against ICE has contributed to a rise in threats and violence targeting law enforcement officers. The investigation into Jahn’s motives remains ongoing.
