Authorities in Pitt County are investigating a devastating two-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 17-year-old girl Tuesday evening, October 7, near South Central High School. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to the scene along Forlines Road around 6 p.m. following reports of a serious collision that left one person dead and another injured.
The victim has been identified as Kimora Ashanti Robinson, a resident of Winterville. Preliminary findings indicate that Robinson was attempting to make a left turn onto Forlines Road from the high school’s parking lot when her vehicle collided with another car traveling westbound. The impact was severe, resulting in extensive damage to both vehicles and prompting an immediate emergency response.
First responders from multiple agencies arrived within minutes and began administering aid. Despite their best efforts, Robinson suffered catastrophic injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her family was later notified of the tragedy, and grief quickly spread through the Winterville community, where Robinson was known for her bright personality and determination. The driver of the second vehicle was transported to ECU Health with serious but non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to recover.
Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash but said that early indications point to a tragic accident rather than negligence. Investigators are reviewing factors such as lighting, visibility, and timing of the turn. No charges have been filed at this stage, and troopers confirmed that alcohol, drugs, or excessive speed are not suspected to be contributing factors. Portions of Forlines Road were temporarily closed Tuesday evening as crews cleared debris and collected evidence for the ongoing investigation.
Residents described the stretch of roadway near South Central High as particularly busy during evening hours, when students and parents are leaving after extracurricular activities. Several locals have called for enhanced safety measures in the area, including better lighting, clearer signage, or the addition of dedicated turning lanes. “That intersection has always been tricky,” one resident said. “Something like this should never have to happen to remind us how dangerous it can be.”
At South Central High School, students and staff are mourning the loss of Robinson, remembered as kind-hearted, focused, and full of potential. School administrators have made grief counselors available to help classmates cope with the tragedy. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol continues to investigate, urging all drivers to remain cautious near schools and high-traffic areas. As the community grieves, they are united in honoring Robinson’s memory and calling for improvements that could prevent future tragedies.
