WILKES COUNTY, N.C. — A deadly two-vehicle crash early Wednesday morning has claimed the life of 53-year-old Kelly Jordan Holleman of North Wilkesboro and left another driver seriously injured. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) confirmed that the collision occurred around 7 a.m. on NC Highway 16 near Grindstone Lane.
According to investigators, Holleman was driving a 2018 Honda CR-V northbound when her vehicle crossed the centerline for reasons that remain under investigation. Her SUV then collided head-on with a 2019 Subaru Forester traveling south on the same stretch of highway. Troopers said the impact was devastating, leaving both vehicles heavily damaged. Emergency responders arrived within minutes, but despite efforts to save her, Holleman died at the scene. Officials noted she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The driver of the Subaru, whose name has not been released, sustained critical injuries and was airlifted by helicopter to a medical center in Winston-Salem for treatment. As of Wednesday evening, no further updates had been provided on their condition. The NCSHP Collision Reconstruction Unit examined the crash site and determined that neither speed nor impairment appeared to be factors. Weather and road conditions were normal at the time, though visibility and other environmental factors are still being reviewed.
Authorities said the section of NC Highway 16 where the crash occurred is a two-lane rural road often used by local commuters. It is known for its limited shoulders and gentle curves that can be challenging during early morning travel. The roadway was closed for several hours while investigators documented the scene and cleared debris before reopening it to the public later in the day.
The death of Kelly Holleman has deeply affected the North Wilkesboro community, where she was known as a kind and active resident. Friends and neighbors have expressed their sorrow and extended condolences to her family. “Kelly was such a sweet person,” one local said. “Her loss is heartbreaking for everyone who knew her.”
Officials used the tragic incident to remind the public of the importance of wearing seatbelts and staying alert on the road. Troopers urged drivers to remain cautious, especially on narrow highways, and to practice safe lane discipline to help prevent future tragedies.
