36-year-old Justin Mattingly Killed in Shooting at Tulsa QuikTrip

TULSA, Okla. — A late-night shooting outside a QuikTrip gas station in west Tulsa ended in tragedy Sunday, leaving a 36-year-old man dead and sparking an ongoing police investigation.

The Tulsa Police Department confirmed that officers were dispatched around 11:20 p.m. on September 21 to the QuikTrip located at 220 N. Gilcrease Museum Road following multiple reports of gunfire. When officers arrived, they found Justin Mattingly, 36, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head in the parking lot. Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, Mattingly was pronounced dead within minutes.

Investigators said the violence stemmed from an earlier altercation between Mattingly and another man inside the convenience store. Surveillance footage showed the suspect assaulting Mattingly, who allegedly responded with verbal threats. The dispute appeared to de-escalate temporarily, but tensions reignited outside shortly afterward.

According to detectives, Mattingly and a friend—both riding motorcycles—later returned to the gas station, pulling up near the suspect’s vehicle at a gas pump. Witness accounts and video evidence indicate that Mattingly kicked the suspect’s car door before beginning to ride away. At that point, the suspect, who remained seated inside his car, fired a single shot. The bullet struck Mattingly in the head, fatally wounding him.

Police detained the alleged shooter at the scene and questioned him but later released him pending further review of the case. Investigators emphasized that no arrest has been made, and the suspect’s name has not been released publicly. Authorities said all collected evidence, including surveillance footage and witness statements, will be forwarded to the Tulsa County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine whether charges are filed.

The incident has left the community shaken, drawing attention once again to the dangers of disputes escalating into deadly violence. Officials stressed that the case remains active, and detectives are continuing to piece together the sequence of events. The Tulsa Police Department is urging anyone with additional information about the shooting to contact investigators as they work to determine whether the fatal encounter will result in criminal charges.
