LA HABRA, Calif. (Oct. 16, 2025) — A devastating shooting Tuesday evening at a well-known Korean barbecue restaurant in La Habra claimed two lives in what police have identified as a murder-suicide involving former romantic partners.

According to the La Habra Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire shortly before 7 p.m. on October 14 at Gui Gui 9292 Korean BBQ, a popular dining spot in a busy commercial area. When officers arrived, they discovered 45-year-old Jacqueline Medrano, of Covina, and 35-year-old Jonathan Wang, of Long Beach, both suffering from gunshot wounds. Paramedics from the Los Angeles County Fire Department pronounced both victims dead at the scene.
Investigators later determined that Wang fatally shot Medrano before taking his own life. Police said that several patrons were inside the restaurant at the time, but no other injuries were reported. The restaurant was reportedly about four hours from closing when the gunfire erupted, sending diners fleeing for safety as chaos broke out.
Authorities confirmed that Medrano and Wang had previously been in a romantic relationship. About a month before the shooting, the Los Angeles County Superior Court had issued a criminal protective order against Wang, prohibiting him from contacting Medrano. The court order was still active at the time of the incident. Police are investigating how Wang was able to obtain the firearm used in the shooting despite the legal restriction.
In a public statement, La Habra Police assured residents that there is no ongoing threat to the community, describing the event as an isolated domestic-related tragedy. The restaurant’s management has not issued a public comment, and the establishment remained closed as investigators processed the scene.
La Habra, a quiet city located roughly 30 miles southeast of Los Angeles, has seen few violent incidents of this nature in recent years. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the case to contact the La Habra Police Department’s Investigations Bureau. As the community mourns, the incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers that can arise when domestic disputes escalate into deadly violence.
