90-Year-Old Man Killed in Collision While Riding Electric Bicycle

AIKEN, S.C. — A 90-year-old Aiken man has died following a tragic collision Tuesday evening involving his electric three-wheeled bicycle and a pickup truck. The Aiken County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as John Pallazo, a longtime resident of the city.

According to Coroner Darryl Ables, the crash occurred around 4:58 p.m. on University Parkway near Arbor Court. Investigators said Pallazo was traveling east on University Parkway when he was struck by a 2022 Toyota Tundra, which was also heading east. The impact threw Pallazo from his electric trike, leaving him critically injured in the roadway as witnesses rushed to call for help.

Emergency personnel from Aiken County Emergency Medical Services quickly arrived on the scene and transported Pallazo to a nearby hospital. Despite life-saving efforts, he succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Officials confirmed he was pronounced dead at 5:34 p.m. The coroner’s office has ordered a toxicology report as part of standard procedure, and the results are still pending.

The Aiken Department of Public Safety and the Aiken County Coroner’s Office are jointly investigating the incident. Authorities have not released the name of the pickup truck’s driver, and no charges have been filed at this time. Investigators are working to determine the exact cause of the crash, including whether visibility, speed, or road conditions played a role.

Neighbors in the area expressed shock and sadness over Pallazo’s death. Several described him as a friendly, active man who enjoyed riding his electric trike around the neighborhood. “Mr. John was such a kind and gentle soul,” one resident shared. “He loved being outdoors and always waved when he rode by. It’s just heartbreaking to know he’s gone.”

Officials are reminding drivers to remain alert and cautious, especially in areas where cyclists and e-bike riders share the road. With the rise in electric bicycle use across South Carolina, authorities emphasize the importance of slowing down and keeping a safe distance. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, and more information will be released once the final reports are completed.
