Lafayette Woman Killed in Late-Night Hit-and-Run; Driver Arrested

LAFAYETTE, La. — A late-night crash in Lafayette turned deadly Wednesday when a pedestrian was struck and killed on North University Avenue. The incident happened around 11:30 p.m., just south of West Willow Street, and has since led to the arrest of a suspect on felony charges.

Authorities identified the victim as 34-year-old Jasmine Lasalle, a Lafayette resident. Investigators said Lasalle was attempting to cross University Avenue outside of a designated crosswalk when she was hit by a vehicle. The driver failed to stop and continued driving after the impact. Lasalle was rushed to a nearby hospital but tragically died from her injuries despite emergency efforts.

Following the collision, Lafayette Police sought help from Louisiana State Police in tracking down the vehicle believed to be involved. Investigators located both the car and the driver, identified as 53-year-old Travis Guillot of Arnaudville, at the registered owner’s address. Guillot was taken into custody, and police executed a search warrant to gather evidence. He voluntarily submitted a breath sample during questioning.

Guillot was later booked into the Lafayette Parish Jail on multiple charges, including felony hit-and-run. Authorities said additional charges could be filed as the investigation develops. Detectives are reviewing key evidence, such as Guillot’s breath test results, eyewitness accounts, and vehicle damage, to determine whether impairment, distraction, or other factors played a role in the crash.

Neighbors and community members expressed grief and concern following Lasalle’s death. University Avenue is one of Lafayette’s busiest roadways, and residents say the area has seen multiple pedestrian accidents over the years. Police stressed the importance of pedestrian safety, urging residents to use designated crosswalks and reminding drivers of their responsibility to remain alert, especially at night when visibility is reduced. They also emphasized that fleeing the scene of a crash not only carries severe legal consequences but also delays life-saving assistance for victims.

The Lafayette Police Department confirmed that Lasalle’s family has been notified and extended condolences to those mourning her loss. Guillot remains in custody while investigators continue piecing together the circumstances of the crash. Authorities said this case underscores the devastating consequences of reckless decisions and serves as a stark reminder of the need for caution on Louisiana’s roads.
