Authorities reported that a 2001 Lexus SUV was traveling eastbound on Highway 36, just west of the North Shore Campground near Lake Almanor, when the vehicle suddenly veered off the roadway at an unknown speed. The SUV rolled multiple times before coming to rest down a steep embankment, surrounded by dense brush and trees. Due to the isolated location of the crash, it was discovered only after a passerby noticed the wreckage and alerted authorities.

Responding officers and emergency medical personnel arrived quickly but determined that both occupants had died at the scene. The victims were identified as a 26-year-old man from Oroville and 23-year-old Jace Turner of Magalia. Officials noted that neither man had been wearing a seatbelt, which may have contributed to the severity of their injuries. The force of the crash caused significant damage to the vehicle, which landed several feet off the roadway.

Investigators are working to determine what led to the crash, though early indications suggest alcohol may have played a role. The CHP has not confirmed whether speed was also a contributing factor but emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing. Toxicology reports and evidence from the crash site will help determine the exact cause.

Friends and family of the victims are reeling from the tragic news. Turner, described by those who knew him as kind-hearted and full of life, had recently been working in the area and often spent weekends near Lake Almanor with friends. The 26-year-old Oroville man, whose name has not yet been released, was remembered as hardworking and loyal, with deep ties to his community.

The CHP used the tragedy to remind drivers of the life-saving importance of seatbelt use and sober driving. “This crash is a painful example of how quickly lives can be lost,” a spokesperson said. “Wearing a seatbelt and making responsible choices behind the wheel can make all the difference.”
