Greenfield Woman, 81, Killed After Being Struck by Truck in Shopping Center Parking Lot

GREENFIELD, Ind. — Authorities are investigating a tragic incident that claimed the life of an elderly woman after she was struck by a vehicle in a Greenfield shopping center parking lot on Sunday morning. The crash happened shortly after 10 a.m. on October 5 in the 1600 block of Melody Lane, near the intersection of East New Road and North State Street.

Police identified the victim as 81-year-old Geraldine Johnson, a longtime Greenfield resident known for her kindness and community spirit. According to the Greenfield Police Department, Johnson was crossing Melody Lane in front of a clothing store when she was hit by a northbound Dodge pickup truck. Emergency crews responded quickly and airlifted her to an Indianapolis hospital, but she sadly succumbed to her injuries.

The driver of the pickup, a 45-year-old man from Alabama, remained at the scene and fully cooperated with authorities. Police said that initial findings do not indicate alcohol or drug involvement, though toxicology tests are pending as part of standard procedure. Investigators noted that Johnson appeared to have been walking in a designated pedestrian area when the collision occurred.

The Hancock County Fatal Accident Crash Team is leading the investigation to determine the precise cause of the crash. Officials are reviewing parking lot surveillance footage and analyzing factors such as visibility, traffic flow, and the vehicle’s speed at the time of impact. Witnesses who were in the area have been interviewed, and investigators are asking anyone with additional information or video footage to contact Greenfield Police.

Local residents have expressed heartbreak over the tragedy, describing Johnson as a cherished neighbor and active member of the community. “She was the kind of person who always had a smile and kind word for everyone,” said one store employee who knew her. Floral tributes have begun appearing near the crash site as the community mourns her loss.

Police emphasized that the incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of caution in areas shared by drivers and pedestrians. “Even in parking lots and low-speed zones, tragedy can happen in an instant,” a department spokesperson said. Authorities urged both motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant, especially in crowded commercial areas. The investigation remains ongoing, with updates expected once all evidence has been reviewed.
