TAMPA, Fla. – Authorities have released the identity of a man who was killed in a weekend shooting outside a sports bar in Ybor City. The Tampa Police Department (TPD) confirmed that the victim was 30-year-old Gabriel Thompkins, whose life was tragically cut short during a violent altercation early Saturday morning.
Police reported that the shooting occurred just after 2:15 a.m. outside the Flexx Sports Bar and Ultra Lounge on East 7th Avenue, a popular nightlife destination in Tampa. According to investigators, an altercation broke out between two groups outside the establishment. Tensions escalated after a 22-year-old man had been ejected from the bar earlier due to disorderly conduct.
Authorities say the ejected individual later returned to the scene armed with a firearm. As he approached the groups outside the lounge, he became involved in a heated dispute with one of the men before opening fire. During the exchange, Thompkins was struck by gunfire, leaving bystanders in shock as the situation unfolded in the busy entertainment district.
Emergency responders quickly arrived to assist the victim. Thompkins was transported to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, he was pronounced dead from his injuries. Police noted that officers were already stationed across the street when the confrontation began, which allowed them to respond within moments. Their quick action also led to the swift apprehension of the suspected shooter, preventing further violence in the crowded area.
At this time, TPD has not released the name of the suspected gunman, and officials have not confirmed whether formal charges have been filed. The investigation remains active as detectives gather witness statements, review surveillance footage, and work to determine what led to the fatal shooting. Authorities stressed that more information will be made public once the case progresses.
The killing has shaken the Ybor City community, where nightlife venues often draw large crowds. Residents and business owners expressed concern over the violence, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to keep the area safe. As the community mourns the loss of Gabriel Thompkins, police continue their investigation into the deadly shooting, urging anyone with additional information to contact Crime Stoppers of Tampa Bay at 1-800-873-TIPS.
