SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Authorities have released the identity of a man who was fatally shot early Monday morning near the Linda Vista Recreation Center, as police continue to search for the suspect responsible for the deadly attack. The San Diego Police Department (SDPD) identified the victim as 40-year-old Enrique Nunez, a local resident.

According to investigators, officers were dispatched to the 7000 block of Linda Vista Road around 12:45 a.m. after receiving multiple reports of gunfire in the area. When first responders arrived, they found Nunez suffering from at least one gunshot wound near the recreation center. Paramedics immediately began life-saving measures before transporting him to a nearby hospital. Despite their efforts, Nunez was later pronounced dead from his injuries.
Detectives from SDPD’s Homicide Unit responded to the scene and launched a full investigation. Officers cordoned off the area surrounding the recreation center as crime scene technicians gathered evidence, including shell casings and surveillance footage from nearby properties. Preliminary reports suggest the shooting may have occurred following an altercation, though police have not confirmed a specific motive.
Authorities have described the suspect as a heavy-set Hispanic male adult, though no additional identifying details have been released. Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and reviewing nearby security cameras in hopes of tracking the suspect’s movements before and after the shooting. Police say the individual fled the scene immediately after the gunfire erupted.
Community members have expressed shock over the violence, noting that the Linda Vista Recreation Center is a popular gathering spot for local families and children. Residents said they were awakened by the sound of gunfire and the arrival of emergency vehicles in the early hours of the morning. City officials have reassured the public that an increased police presence will remain in the area as the investigation continues.
The San Diego Police Department is urging anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward. Those with tips can contact the department’s homicide investigators directly at 619-531-2293, or provide anonymous information through Crime Stoppers by calling 1-888-580-8477.
