PERU, Ind. — An 89-year-old woman has died and two others were seriously injured following a two-vehicle crash that occurred late Saturday morning in Miami County. Authorities said the tragic collision involved two Chevrolet SUVs and prompted a major emergency response from multiple local agencies.
According to the Indiana State Police Peru Post, the crash happened just after 10:30 a.m. on Meridian Road near East County Road 500 North. Investigators reported that 53-year-old Jennifer K. Workman, of Peru, was driving a 2020 Chevrolet Blazer northbound on Meridian Road, accompanied by her passenger, 32-year-old Tiffany D. Baker, also of Peru. Police said Workman was attempting to pass another vehicle when her SUV collided head-on with a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox driven by 62-year-old Neal W. Birner, of Peru.
Inside the Equinox were two passengers: 89-year-old Eclista M. Birner and 68-year-old Michael V. Birner, both from Peru. The violent impact caused extensive damage to both vehicles, leaving multiple occupants trapped and injured. Emergency responders from the Indiana State Police, Miami County Sheriff’s Office, and Peru Police Department rushed to the scene to assist.
Despite immediate lifesaving efforts, Eclista Birner was pronounced dead at the scene by the Miami County Coroner’s Office. Jennifer Workman and Michael Birner both suffered severe injuries and were airlifted by Lutheran Air to nearby trauma centers. Neal Birner and Tiffany Baker were transported by ambulance to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The stretch of Meridian Road was closed for several hours as investigators examined the crash site and cleared the wreckage.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the factors that led to the deadly collision. Investigators said they are reviewing roadway conditions, vehicle evidence, and witness accounts to determine whether speed, driver error, or visibility issues contributed to the crash. Officials have reminded motorists to exercise caution when passing on two-lane roads, particularly in rural areas where sightlines may be limited.
The Peru community has expressed deep sympathy for the Birner family and others affected by the tragedy. Friends described Eclista Birner as a kind and devoted resident who was actively involved in community activities. Law enforcement officials used the moment to emphasize safe driving habits, urging all motorists to remain patient and attentive. The investigation remains ongoing.
