Devonte Redmond killed in Deadly Overnight Shooting at Columbia Apartment Complex

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred early Wednesday morning at the Columbia Garden Apartments on Plowden Road, leaving one man dead. The Columbia Police Department confirmed that officers were dispatched to the scene shortly before 1:30 a.m. following reports of gunfire in the area.

When officers arrived, they discovered an unresponsive man lying outside the apartment complex. Police immediately began performing CPR while awaiting emergency medical services, but despite their efforts, the victim was later pronounced dead. The Richland County Coroner’s Office has identified the deceased as 29-year-old Devonte Redmond, a resident of Columbia.

Police Chief W.H. “Skip” Holbrook said that detectives and forensic teams spent several hours processing the scene and gathering evidence. A K-9 unit was also deployed to help locate potential clues that could lead to identifying those responsible. Authorities have not yet released details about a possible suspect or motive in the shooting.

The apartment complex and surrounding neighborhood were temporarily closed off as officers canvassed the area and spoke with residents who may have witnessed the incident. Investigators believe Redmond was shot outside the complex, though they are still working to determine the sequence of events that led to the shooting. Officials said the victim appeared to have been targeted, but no further information has been released.

Residents in the community expressed shock and sadness following the tragedy, describing the neighborhood as typically quiet. “It’s frightening to wake up to something like this,” one resident said. “We just want to feel safe where we live.” Local leaders have called for calm and urged anyone with information to cooperate with authorities as the investigation continues.

Chief Holbrook encouraged members of the public to come forward if they have any knowledge that could help solve the case. “We need the community’s help to bring justice for this young man and his family,” Holbrook stated. Anyone with information is urged to contact Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or submit an anonymous tip online. Investigators say even the smallest detail could be vital in identifying the person or people responsible for Redmond’s death.
