WILMINGTON, Del. — Authorities are investigating a deadly shooting that occurred over the weekend in Wilmington, leaving one man dead and prompting a widespread search for answers. According to the Wilmington Police Department, officers responded to reports of gunfire around 2:36 p.m. on Saturday in the unit block of Stroud Street. Upon arrival, they found a 33-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Emergency responders immediately provided medical assistance at the scene before transporting the victim to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of doctors and paramedics, he was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. On Monday morning, officials identified the victim as Desmond Scott, a Wilmington resident. Authorities said Scott’s family has been notified, and grief counselors have been made available to assist them during this difficult time.
The area surrounding Stroud Street remained cordoned off for several hours on Saturday as detectives collected evidence and interviewed witnesses. Police were seen marking bullet casings and examining nearby vehicles and structures for signs of damage. Residents described hearing several loud gunshots, followed by people shouting and cars speeding away. “It all happened so fast,” said one neighbor. “We heard the shots and then saw police rushing in from every direction.”
As of Monday, no arrests have been made, and investigators have not identified a suspect or revealed a possible motive. Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses and continuing to canvass the neighborhood for additional witnesses. Officials have also not confirmed whether the shooting was targeted or random. Police have urged residents to remain calm and report any information that could help move the case forward.
The incident marks yet another violent episode in Wilmington, where community leaders have repeatedly called for stronger collaboration between law enforcement and residents to address rising gun violence. Local organizations are planning a community vigil in honor of Scott, emphasizing the need for peace and unity in the wake of the tragedy. “We can’t continue losing young lives like this,” said a community advocate. “Every shooting leaves another family broken.”
