SOUTH BOSTON, VA — Authorities have identified the woman who tragically lost her life after being struck by a Halifax County school bus earlier this week. The South Boston Police Department confirmed the victim as 60-year-old Dawn Nemac of Buffalo Junction in Mecklenburg County.
According to police reports, the fatal incident occurred on Bruce Street, in front of a building at 700 Bruce Street, as the school bus was completing its afternoon route. Investigators say the bus had stopped to let students off, and after all the children had safely exited, the driver began to move forward—striking Nemac in the process. Witnesses immediately called 911, and emergency responders arrived at the scene within minutes.
Nemac was rushed to Halifax Sentara Hospital, where medical personnel worked to save her life. Sadly, despite their efforts, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. Authorities identified the driver as a 70-year-old Halifax County Schools employee who remained at the scene and cooperated fully with law enforcement. Police confirmed that no charges have been filed at this time, though the investigation remains active as officials continue to review evidence.
Investigators are working closely with the Halifax County School District and Virginia State Police to determine what led to the tragedy. Their work includes reviewing camera footage, interviewing witnesses, and inspecting the school bus to ensure compliance with safety and mechanical standards. Officials noted that none of the children on board were injured. The South Boston Police Department expressed deep sorrow, calling the incident “an incredibly sad situation for everyone involved.”
The Halifax County Public Schools administration released a statement expressing condolences to Nemac’s family and assuring parents that student safety remains the district’s top priority. School counselors have been made available to support any students or staff affected by the traumatic event. Meanwhile, police are conducting a scene reconstruction to analyze factors such as lighting, visibility, and vehicle placement that may have contributed to the collision.
