CHICAGO, IL — A heartbreaking act of gun violence took the life of 16-year-old David Mason Jr., affectionately known as “Lil Dave,” on Tuesday afternoon in Chicago’s West Garfield Park neighborhood. The teen’s death has left his family and community mourning yet another young life cut short by senseless violence.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers responded around 2:30 p.m. on October 21, 2025, to reports of shots fired near West End Avenue and Keeler Avenue. When officers arrived, witnesses informed them that the victim had already been taken to a nearby hospital by someone at the scene. A short time later, Mount Sinai Hospital confirmed receiving a teenage male suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head, chest, and arms. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, David Mason Jr. was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival.
Investigators said David had been standing on a sidewalk when gunfire suddenly erupted, striking him several times. It remains unclear whether the shooter was on foot or inside a vehicle. No arrests have been made, and detectives from Area Four continue to investigate the deadly shooting. Officers canvassed the area Tuesday evening, seeking surveillance footage and witnesses who may have seen or heard the gunfire.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the homicide to submit anonymous tips at CPDTIP.com

David’s loved ones are devastated by the loss. Family members described him as a bright, kind-hearted teenager who loved music, sports, and making others laugh. “He had dreams, he had potential — and now he’s gone,” said one family friend, fighting tears. The tragedy has reignited calls within the community for action to address youth violence and ensure safer streets for Chicago’s young people.
As West Garfield Park mourns, residents gathered for a small vigil near the shooting site, lighting candles and releasing balloons in David’s memory. Many expressed frustration and grief, calling for unity and solutions to end the cycle of violence. “How many more of our children must die before something changes?” one neighbor asked. May David “Lil Dave” Mason Jr. rest in peace — gone too soon, but never forgotten.
