22-Year-Old Woman Killed, Man Critically Injured in North Lawndale Shooting

CHICAGO, Ill. — A young woman was killed and a man critically injured in a shooting Saturday night in Chicago’s North Lawndale neighborhood, according to police. The incident has left family members and community residents devastated as detectives continue to search for answers.

Authorities said officers responded to reports of gunfire around 8:10 p.m. in the 3800 block of West Roosevelt Road. Upon arrival, officers found paramedics treating an unresponsive 22-year-old woman lying on the ground. A 26-year-old man, also suffering from gunshot wounds, was being treated in an ambulance nearby.

The woman, identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office as Courjanae Unique White, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the chest. She was transported to Stroger Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. The medical examiner ruled her death a homicide, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Police said the male victim suffered a gunshot wound to the back and remains in critical condition at Stroger Hospital. No suspects are currently in custody, and detectives have not yet determined a motive for the shooting. Investigators from Area Four are continuing to gather evidence and interview potential witnesses to establish what led up to the violence.

Family members identified the victim on social media, where she was affectionately known as “Ta’nae” or “Ja’nae.” Loved ones expressed heartbreak and anger over her death, describing it as a senseless act of violence. “Naw y’all ain’t never just killed my niece,” wrote her aunt, Denise Byrd Allen, on Facebook, asking for prayers for the grieving family. Many community members echoed her sentiments, condemning the ongoing cycle of gun violence plaguing Chicago neighborhoods.

The North Lawndale community has been shaken by yet another tragedy, with residents calling for justice and renewed efforts to curb shootings in the area. Police have urged anyone with information to come forward as the investigation remains ongoing.
