Pedestrian Killed in Early-Morning Collision on Napoleon Road in Allen County

Authorities in Allen County, Ohio, are investigating a tragic early-morning crash that claimed the life of a pedestrian on Thursday. According to the Lima Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the incident occurred shortly after 4:30 a.m. along Napoleon Road, near State Route 81.

Preliminary findings indicate that a pickup truck traveling northbound struck a person walking in the same lane. The pedestrian, identified as 40-year-old Cody Gear of Elida, was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders. Despite immediate life-saving efforts, Gear could not be revived. The driver of the truck, 81-year-old Merl Hall of Lafayette, was not physically injured in the collision.

Investigators spent several hours at the scene examining roadway evidence, vehicle damage, and environmental conditions. Officials confirmed that both lighting and visibility factors are being considered, along with vehicle speed and pedestrian placement on the roadway. The road, located in a rural section of Allen County with limited street lighting, was temporarily closed to allow investigators to safely process the area before being reopened later that morning.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol stated that the crash remains under active investigation, with no further details released at this time. Standard procedures, including toxicology testing and mechanical inspections, will be completed as part of the comprehensive review. Once finalized, findings will be forwarded to the Allen County Prosecutor’s Office for review, which is customary in fatal roadway incidents.

Authorities are also using the tragedy to remind both pedestrians and drivers about roadway safety, especially during early-morning or low-light hours. Officials advise pedestrians to wear reflective clothing, carry flashlights, and walk facing oncoming traffic to remain visible. Drivers are similarly urged to remain alert and reduce speed when traveling through rural or dimly lit areas, where pedestrians can be difficult to see.

Local residents have expressed sadness over Gear’s death, sharing condolences and messages of support for his family and friends. The loss, officials noted, serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of walking along unlit roads and the importance of caution for all road users. The Ohio State Highway Patrol continues to encourage anyone with information about the incident to contact their office as the investigation moves forward.
