Gaines County Woman Killed in Rollover Crash Near County Road 20

GAINES COUNTY, Texas — Authorities are investigating a tragic single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of Cheryl Ann Baxley, a Gaines County resident, on Saturday afternoon. The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) reported that the crash occurred around 4 p.m. on October 26 near the intersection of County Roads 210 and 251, located in a rural part of the county.

According to investigators, Baxley was driving eastbound on County Road 20 when her vehicle continued through the intersection without stopping at a posted stop sign. The car struck a dirt embankment, went briefly airborne, and overturned several times before coming to rest. Moments later, the vehicle caught fire, prompting immediate calls for emergency assistance. Nearby residents attempted to help, but the flames quickly spread, engulfing the vehicle.

Emergency personnel from Gaines County Emergency Services and Texas DPS arrived shortly after the crash to extinguish the fire and provide medical aid. Unfortunately, Baxley was found outside the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene. Officials confirmed that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash — a factor they believe contributed to the severity of her injuries. The vehicle was later removed from the scene for inspection as part of the investigation.

Authorities are continuing to review evidence to determine what may have caused the crash. Investigators are examining roadway conditions, visibility, and vehicle performance, as well as considering potential driver factors such as fatigue or distraction. Weather at the time was reportedly clear, ruling out poor visibility as a primary cause. The DPS will complete a full reconstruction report to establish the sequence of events leading up to the fatal crash.

Local residents expressed sadness upon hearing the news, describing Baxley as a friendly and familiar face in the community. Some neighbors also noted that the intersection where the incident occurred can be dangerous, particularly for drivers unfamiliar with the area or traveling at higher speeds. The tragedy has renewed calls among residents for improved signage and safety awareness on rural roads throughout the county.

The Texas Department of Public Safety and local authorities extended their condolences to Baxley’s family and urged drivers to exercise caution when navigating rural intersections. Officials reminded motorists to obey all traffic controls, reduce speed in low-visibility areas, and always wear seatbelts. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details will be released once the final report is completed.
