WESLACO, Texas — The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is appealing to the public for help locating a driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run early Sunday morning that claimed the life of a local woman. The incident occurred around 6 a.m. on Mile 4 West Road, just north of Mile 12 ½ Road North. According to DPS, a southbound vehicle struck a pedestrian walking along the roadway and then fled the scene.
The victim has been identified as 27-year-old Cassandra I. Hernandez of Weslaco. Emergency responders arrived quickly but sadly pronounced Hernandez dead at the scene. Law enforcement officers immediately began an investigation, searching for the vehicle involved and collecting physical evidence left behind on the roadway.
Authorities have since identified a possible vehicle of interest. Based on initial findings, investigators believe the suspect vehicle may be a black Chevrolet Impala, model years 2014 to 2020. The car is thought to have front-right damage and may be missing its right-side mirror. DPS officials urge anyone who may have seen a vehicle matching this description or who has information about the driver to contact the Weslaco DPS Office at 956-565-7600.
Investigators continue to review security footage from surrounding areas and are interviewing witnesses who might have seen the vehicle before or after the crash. DPS has expressed gratitude to community members who have already provided leads and stressed the importance of public involvement in solving hit-and-run cases. Even seemingly minor details, such as noticing new vehicle damage or hearing secondhand information, can be critical in identifying the driver.
The crash took place on a quiet stretch of Mile 4 West Road, commonly used by residents and early-morning commuters. In light of the tragedy, officials have reminded both motorists and pedestrians to remain vigilant—especially during low-light hours when visibility is reduced. Authorities also reiterated that leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death carries severe legal consequences and urged drivers to stay, call for help, and cooperate with law enforcement.
As part of the ongoing investigation, forensic experts are analyzing debris collected from the site to help determine the exact make and model of the suspect vehicle. DPS has asked residents in the area to check home security cameras for footage between 5:30 and 6:30 a.m. on the morning of the crash. Officials remain hopeful that with the public’s help, they will soon identify and locate the driver responsible for Hernandez’s death. DPS concluded by extending condolences to her family and reaffirming its commitment to securing justice.
