72-Year-Old Thomson Man Killed in Single-Vehicle Rollover Crash on East Hill Street

THOMSON, Ga. — Authorities in McDuffie County are investigating a deadly single-vehicle crash that claimed the life of a 72-year-old man Saturday afternoon in Thomson. The victim, identified as Arthur Alexander, was pronounced dead shortly after being transported to a local hospital, officials confirmed.

According to McDuffie County Coroner Paul Johnson, the accident occurred around 2 p.m. in the 400 block of East Hill Street. Investigators said Alexander was driving a 2018 Chevrolet Silverado when the pickup truck veered off the roadway for reasons still under investigation and overturned before coming to a stop off the shoulder. Alexander was the only person in the vehicle at the time.

Emergency crews from the Thomson Fire Department, McDuffie County Sheriff’s Office, and local EMS responded quickly to the scene. Paramedics worked to provide medical care before transporting Alexander to the hospital. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at 2:51 p.m. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no additional injuries were reported.

The Georgia State Patrol (GSP) has taken the lead in the investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Troopers are examining physical evidence from the crash site, including tire marks, vehicle damage, and road conditions, to piece together what happened. Investigators are also considering possible contributing factors such as speed, mechanical failure, or a potential medical emergency. The coroner’s office has not confirmed whether an autopsy will be performed, though it is standard procedure in cases like this.

Authorities temporarily closed a portion of East Hill Street to allow first responders to manage the scene and ensure public safety. The roadway was reopened later in the afternoon after crews removed the damaged vehicle and cleared debris. Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters assisted with traffic control and cleanup efforts during the investigation.

News of Arthur Alexander’s death has deeply affected the Thomson community, where he was remembered as a kind and respected resident. Friends and neighbors offered condolences to his family, describing him as a warm and generous man who was always willing to lend a hand. Local officials extended their sympathies to the Alexander family and reminded motorists to remain vigilant, wear seatbelts, and drive with caution—especially on local roads that can quickly turn dangerous due to changing conditions.
