LOS ANGELES, CA — Authorities have identified the teenage boy who was shot and killed early Sunday morning in the Vermont-Vista neighborhood of South Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner confirmed the victim as 15-year-old Anthony Smithers.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), officers were dispatched around 12:43 a.m. to the 800 block of West 97th Street following reports of gunfire. When they arrived, officers found the teenage victim suffering from at least one gunshot wound. Paramedics with the Los Angeles Fire Department responded shortly after, but despite their efforts, Smithers was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators spent several hours canvassing the area, collecting evidence, and interviewing potential witnesses. However, as of Sunday evening, police had not released any information about a possible suspect or motive behind the shooting. Detectives are also reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses in hopes of identifying those responsible.
The Vermont-Vista community, already struggling with rising youth violence, has been left shaken by the killing. Neighbors described hearing several gunshots in the middle of the night and expressed concern about the ongoing dangers young people face in the area. “It’s heartbreaking — he was just a kid,” said one resident, who asked not to be identified. “We need more protection and more hope for these children.”
Authorities have not confirmed whether the shooting was gang-related or a targeted attack. The LAPD’s South Bureau Homicide Division is leading the investigation and has urged anyone with information to come forward. The death of Anthony Smithers marks yet another tragedy in a community where residents continue to call for stronger youth outreach and violence prevention programs. Police officials emphasized their commitment to finding those responsible and bringing justice to the young victim’s family. As the investigation continues, community members are planning a small candlelight vigil in Smithers’ memory, honoring a life cut short far too soon.
