SCHOHARIE, N.Y. – New York State Police are investigating a devastating single-vehicle crash that claimed the lives of two Florida residents early Sunday morning. The fatal collision occurred at approximately 12:56 a.m. on September 14, 2025, near the intersection of Richard Hill Road and Mossy Cliff Lane in Schoharie.
Authorities identified the driver as 59-year-old Delwin Shaver of Kissimmee, Florida. According to investigators, Shaver had been traveling eastbound on Richard Hill Road when his vehicle veered off the roadway and collided with a tree. The force of the impact was so severe that the vehicle caught fire. Despite a rapid response from emergency personnel, Shaver was pronounced dead at the scene due to the catastrophic nature of the crash.
Efforts were made by bystanders to rescue occupants from the burning vehicle. Among those pulled from the wreckage was 50-year-old Sybil Laraway, also of Kissimmee. She was rushed to Albany Medical Center for emergency treatment. However, despite the efforts of medical staff, Laraway later succumbed to her injuries. The incident marked a double tragedy, leaving both Florida residents dead as a result of the early-morning crash.
Investigators are now working to piece together what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. State Police have confirmed that they are reviewing a number of potential contributing factors, including road conditions, weather, driver error, and possible mechanical failure. Forensic specialists and crash reconstruction experts are examining vehicle damage and physical evidence from the scene, such as skid marks or debris, to determine how the collision unfolded.
The fatal crash has drawn attention to the dangers of single-vehicle accidents, which often prove deadly when vehicles leave the roadway at high speeds or under reduced visibility. Authorities emphasized that such incidents remain a critical safety concern, particularly during overnight hours when roadways may be darker and less traveled. Officials continue to urge drivers to remain alert and cautious while behind the wheel.
As the investigation moves forward, the deaths of Shaver and Laraway have left both their Florida community and the small town of Schoharie in mourning. Family members and friends are grappling with the sudden loss, while law enforcement works to provide answers about the events leading up to the crash. The New York State Police confirmed that the investigation is active and more details will be released as findings become available.
