New York Man Killed in I-95 Crash in South Carolina

DORCHESTER COUNTY, S.C. — Authorities have identified the victim of a fatal weekend crash along Interstate 95 as 69-year-old David Brian Casey of Gloversville, New York, according to the Dorchester County Coroner’s Office. The deadly collision occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, September 27, near mile marker 78.

Investigators reported that the crash took place around 3:30 a.m. when Casey’s vehicle was struck from behind by another car traveling along I-95. The impact left Casey’s vehicle heavily damaged and caused severe injuries. Emergency crews responded swiftly, and Casey was transported to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he was later pronounced dead.

The Dorchester County Coroner confirmed Casey’s identity and said the official cause of death will be recorded in the case file. Meanwhile, the South Carolina Highway Patrol (SCHP) has launched an investigation into the crash. Officials have not yet released details regarding the second vehicle involved, including the driver’s condition or whether charges are being considered.

Fatal crashes along I-95 are unfortunately common, with the interstate serving as a major travel corridor stretching from Florida to Maine. The stretch of highway in South Carolina often sees heavy overnight traffic, where visibility is reduced and high speeds increase the severity of collisions. Authorities noted that rear-end crashes, such as the one that claimed Casey’s life, can be especially devastating on high-speed roadways.

Investigators are expected to review several possible contributing factors, including driver speed, distraction, impairment, and roadway conditions at the time of the crash. Accident reconstruction specialists will examine the evidence to determine how the collision unfolded. Officials stressed that such investigations are thorough and can take time before conclusions are reached.

For Casey’s family in New York, the sudden loss has been heartbreaking. While no formal statements have been released, condolences have poured in as word of his death spread. Local residents and safety advocates have also expressed concern about the frequency of deadly incidents along I-95 in South Carolina. Authorities continue to urge drivers to remain alert, avoid distractions, and maintain safe distances when traveling at high speeds. The investigation remains active, and officials say additional updates will be provided once more information is available.
