SOUTHPORT, N.C. — Authorities are investigating a mass shooting that left three people dead and at least nine others injured late Saturday night at the Southport Yacht Basin. According to police, the gunman opened fire from a boat on the Cape Fear River near the American Fish Company restaurant before fleeing toward Oak Island, where he was later detained.

The shooting began just after 9:30 p.m. on September 27, when witnesses reported a boat lingering in the water for nearly an hour before gunfire erupted. Patrons at the waterfront bar and restaurant scrambled for cover as multiple rounds struck individuals on the deck and pier. Emergency crews from Southport Police, the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, the State Bureau of Investigation, and federal agents rushed to the scene.
Southport Public Information Officer ChyAnn Ketchum confirmed that the U.S. Coast Guard intercepted a man matching the suspect’s description at the NE 55th Street public boat ramp in Oak Island. A spotted dog was found aboard the vessel, matching photos previously shared on the suspect’s social media accounts. While officials have not officially released his identity, multiple reports link him to Nigel Max Edge, formerly known as Sean William DeBevoise, a former U.S. Marine with a history of erratic behavior and legal filings.
Edge, who served multiple overseas deployments, gained brief public attention in 2012 when country singer Kellie Pickler invited him to the CMT Music Awards to honor his military service. In later years, however, he made headlines for unconventional lawsuits, including one against Pickler, whom he accused of attempting to kill him. Court records show that under both names, Edge represented himself in numerous cases, many dismissed for lack of merit. His writings and social media posts often accused the government, military, and law enforcement of conspiracies against him.
On the night of the attack, investigators say Edge’s boat remained near the American Fish Company before he allegedly opened fire. Southport Police Chief Todd Coring confirmed that three people were killed and at least nine others wounded. Four victims were transported to Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, while two others were treated at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport.
Authorities emphasize that the investigation remains in its early stages. The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office, State Bureau of Investigation, ATF, and District Attorney Jon David are assisting. Officials urge anyone with information to contact Southport Police at 910-457-7911.
