Eunice Bicyclist Killed in Highway 190 Crash with Vehicle in St. Landry Parish

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. — A tragic crash on Tuesday night claimed the life of a Eunice man after his bicycle collided with a vehicle along Louisiana Highway 190. Louisiana State Police said the accident happened just before 8 p.m. near Eastpark Drive, leaving 54-year-old Michael Fontenot dead at the scene.

According to investigators, Fontenot had been riding eastbound on the left shoulder of Highway 190 when he attempted a U-turn. At the same time, a 2020 Acura TLX was traveling eastbound in the left lane. Troopers say Fontenot turned directly into the vehicle’s path, and the impact proved fatal. He was not wearing a helmet, authorities confirmed. Emergency responders pronounced him dead on site.

The driver of the Acura, who has not been identified, was properly restrained by a seatbelt and was not injured in the crash. State Police noted there were no signs of impairment, and the driver voluntarily provided a breath sample that registered no alcohol. As part of standard procedure, a toxicology sample was collected from Fontenot, which has been sent for testing to determine if any substances played a role.

Troopers continue to investigate what factors may have contributed to the crash. They are reviewing roadway conditions, visibility, and witness statements as part of the ongoing inquiry. Highway 190 is a busy corridor with heavy traffic and limited shoulder space, a combination that can make bicycling hazardous. Investigators emphasized that sudden maneuvers, such as U-turns, leave little time for drivers to react safely.

Fontenot’s death adds to a troubling trend of bicycle fatalities across Louisiana in recent years. Safety experts note that most crashes occur on high-speed roadways where cyclists must share limited space with vehicles. While state law does not require adults to wear helmets, officials stress that helmets and reflective gear can help reduce the risk of severe or fatal injuries in accidents involving motor vehicles.

The Eunice community is mourning the loss of Fontenot, a longtime resident whose sudden death has underscored the vulnerabilities cyclists face. As the investigation continues, authorities are reminding both drivers and bicyclists to remain vigilant. Even routine decisions on the road can have life-altering consequences, and safety advocates continue to urge caution, visibility, and awareness from everyone who shares Louisiana’s highways.
